How Healthy is Your Living Will?

Most people already know that a Healthcare Living Will (aka Advance Directive) is an important document. It is an expression of your healthcare preferences; namely, the types of interventions you want and don’t want when critically ill. Also, it formally designates a surrogate decision-maker to speak on your behalf when you can’t communicate due to the functional incapacity that occurs during severe illness.

How healthy is your Living Will? Do you understand it? Does your surrogate? Does it clearly and effectively state your values and your wishes? The answers to all these questions should be YES. Preparation can sometimes be your best medicine. Be empowered. Be in control of your health care. Dr. Katrina Bramstedt, a Sausalito clinical ethicist, author and educator can help you find your way.

September 7th, Windows for Beginners
Do you do Windows? In this basic computer class trainer Patty Hoyt will teach you how to navigate around Windows interface. We will explore the desktop and learn how to use the task bar and start button, how to create and move files to organize your data, use the right click function of the mouse, and search for lost files.

October 5th, E-mail Basics
Are you interested in communicating online with friends, family and colleagues? You will learn how to address and send an email message. The class also covers replying to messages, forwarding messages to other people, and saving messages. To establish basic Internet messaging skills; editing, sending, receiving, reading, replying, deleting, undeleting, forwarding and saving messages as files. If there is time, we will cover the function of signature files, and create one.

November 2nd, Internet Searching for Beginners
The class is designed to give you a solid foundation and understanding of the use of different search engines. We will look at how they find results as well as learn specific techniques on how to narrow searches so you can find information quickly. This is a must if you find you are having difficulty locating information or narrowing your search on the internet. You will be amazed at the different search engines beyond Google. If time permits, we will cover the power that Google’s advanced search option has. Some basic computer skills will be helpful.

After 32 years, Sausalito's City Librarian, Mary Richardson, will be retiring in July. It will be the end of an era. Mary has been at the helm through a multitude of changes, and her tenure has already surpassed even that of her famously long-standing predecessor, Mabel Wosser, who was the head librarian here from 1937-1960.

He has developed a strength based program, training those with mental conditions not to accept a diminished view of their lives and to put in place the skills to lead an extraordinary life, with bipolar or depression.

Upcoming Computer Classes-Microsoft Excel

June 1st, Basic Microsoft Excel I
This class will start with covering the basics. We will cover spreadsheet layout vocabulary and functions, entering basic data, changing column width, editing data, copying and moving cells, and inserting and deleting rows and columns. You should have advanced beginner status in Word if you want to be successful in this class.

July 6th, Basic Microsoft Excel II
Class two will expand on Excel Part I and then work with formatting cells, (i.e. alignment, font, number, patterns, borders), sorting, multiple sheets, and formatting the page.

Sausalito Library Space Needs Assessment

On May 17, 2011 Librarian Mary Richardson presented the Library Space Needs Assessment to the City Council at its regular meeting.

In 2007 the Library’s Strategic Plan identified the need for an improved physical facility as one of its major service priorities. In July 2010 the Library Foundation engaged the library facility planning firm of Page + Moris to assess the Library’s space needs and to identify strategies to more effectively use the current Library’s space.

Page + Moris reviewed community demographics, Library usage patterns, community input received both during the strategic planning process as well as focus groups held in September, interviewed Library staff and compared service levels with best planning practices among libraries.

The resulting report recommends both short and long term improvements. The short term improvements are to the existing library space. The long term improvements require additional space.

Marking the Anniversary of the 1906 San Francisco Earthquake...

Ciji Ware, author, will discuss her latest novel, A Race to Splendor, based on the story of California's first licensed woman architect, Julia Morgan, restoring the fabled Fairmont Hotel in ten months following the disaster that obliterated 400 city blocks and left some 250,000 people homeless for up to two and a half years.

Ware, a resident of Sausalito, is an Emmy award-winning television producer, broadcaster, print journalist, and the author of eight books.

Abby Wasserman, local author, Mary Tuthill Lindheim: Art and Inspiration

Mary Lindheim was a prominent Sausalito artist from 1952-1969 who was active in saving the waterfront along Bridgeway; in the Sister City program with Vina del Mar, Chile; in the young Sausalito Art Festival; in the efforts to create a Sausalito Arts Center; as well as being a close colleague and friend of Edith Heath, Peter Macchiarini, and other Sausalito artists during a burgeoning creative period in Sausalito’s history. This program looks at her own extraordinary creative output, work on behalf of the community, and the sources of inspiration for her sculpture, ceramics, and activism.

Through a cooperative effort from the Friends of the Sausalito Library and a generous grant from the Sausalito Art Festival, the Library is able to offer Sausalito patrons single general admission tickets to either the de Young or the Legion of Honor museums. Two tickets per library card, per year, while supplies last.

To improve future service, MARINet is replacing the old server on August 24th. Unfortunately, that means for that day service will be limited. Some of the likely fallout:

Expect delays at the circulation desk

No placement of new holds

No new library cards

No renewals

No catalog access

No computer reservation access

Wireless and walk-up use of Internet stations should be working.
